Midge Walkers

Walk No.  202

Farrington Circular – 19th April 2026

This was our second attempt to do this walk after last month’s walk was abandoned due to the heavy rain. This time, 15 walkers assembled with 1 dog with a further two walkers joining us about one mile in. The weather was ideal, although rain threatened, but, thankfully, did not materialise. The meeting point was Fowler Lane, near Lancashire’s new cricket ground. We headed off down away from the main road to a right hand bend in the road where we turned left down a footpath to a style which we negotiated and went straight across the field to the railway line. Coming to the fence, we turned left  and followed the fence until we eventually came to Centurian Way.

Turning to the right, we got to the top of the railway bridge where we were able to cross safely (we could see traffic from both directions). We again followed the railway line, but now on the other side, until we come to a road where we turned left and walked uphill to the corner where we went down the steps on our right and turned left. We followed this road until we came down to Golden Hill Lane where we turned right. We passed Arnold Clark, car showroom and Morrisons turning right into Wheelton Lane and immediately left down Heys Hunt Avenue. Second road on the right brought us to our refreshment stop at the impressive feature of three oak leaves (we was told that the estate we were in was called THE OAKS.)

Refreshments consumed and group pictures taken, we set off again which took us past the Midge Hall Methodist Church minister’s new house. This cul-de-sac led us down to a lovely, wooded area managed by GREENBELT. It was nice to see that consideration was given to providing the estate with green space, there was a large, grassed field, a well-maintained playpark and the woodland with a lovely clean stream running through. On entering the wood, we headed left and followed the stream until we exited onto a road and turned right down an unmade road to a tarmacked path past the Amazon Warehouse until we again came to Centurian Way which we followed back to the Railway bridge and back down the footpath we had arrived on earlier. This time, instead of turning right back to the style we had taken earlier (that would have been too easy, we went straight on, following the railway line, over a couple of styles and coming out onto a road where we turned right.

We followed this road and eventually arrived back at Fowler Lane and to our cars. Another four and a half mile walk completed in pleasant weather and pleasant company. Thank you to all that turned up and we look forward to our next walk from Worthington Lakes on 17th May.
